A Lifetime's Work, Now Accessible
Dr. Ted Carrick, after nearly 50 years in clinical practice, was driven by a core concern: life-changing neurological tools were too expensive for many. He set out to create a superior device, not for profit, but to empower clinicians. This technology, proven to evoke profound changes, is now available to doctors at a low cost, ensuring broader access to advanced neurological care.
FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS
Why did you make this unit?
The CereMod™ Alpha was developed to solve a critical gap in neuromodulation tools. Designed by functional neurologists, for functional neurologists, it offers a precise, evidence-backed solution for nervous system modulation—going beyond symptom relief to actively enhance neural synchronization.
To bring this vision to life, Carrick Institute partnered with Hoolest, a pioneer in vagus nerve stimulation technology. Together, we brought in top PhD-trained biomedical engineers with deep experience in neuromodulation to custom-build a device that met our exact clinical specifications. The result is a powerful, affordable, and portable tool tailored to the functional neurology community.
Its potential clinical applications include pain management, movement disorders, rehabilitation, muscle re-education, and organ function modulation. The settings are intended to stimulate peripheral nerves, block pain signal transmission, alter neurotransmitter release, stimulate motor unit recruitment, and enhance neuroplasticity, all while supporting brain function. This version meets the clinical needs of the functional neurologist who utilizes nerve stimulation as a modality.
How many programs are on this unit?
The CereMod™ Alpha includes ten pre-set, evidence-informed programs. Each program is ready to use immediately, without the need to adjust stimulation parameters manually. We are open to creating additional programs as more evidence-supported protocols are submitted and reviewed by our team.
What areas of the body do you use each setting, and for how long?
The device’s electrodes are spaced approximately 1.5 inches (2 centimeters) apart, making the CereMod™ Alpha both powerful and precise. This spacing allows for applications on deep peripheral nerves such as the tibial or median nerve, as well as on more superficial structures like auricular branches or cranial nerves, including the vagus nerve. The specific areas of application and duration of use depend on the chosen clinical program and the treatment goals determined by the practitioner.
The device can be used across the musculoskeletal system, the peripheral nervous system, and other oral and cutaneous targets. Protocols are adapted to suit individual patient presentations.
How do you know that it actually works?
Besides our clinical testing, this device’s design is informed by clinical guidelines and systematic reviews covering the use of electrotherapy in medicine. The strength of the supporting evidence varies based on the intended application. For example, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) shows moderate evidence for use in chronic musculoskeletal pain.
Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) has strong evidence supporting its use in rehabilitation and recovery after neurological injury. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is well-supported for mobility restoration in stroke and spinal cord injury. Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is FDA-approved for neuropathic pain syndromes such as complex regional pain syndrome. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has moderate to strong evidence for use in refractory epilepsy, treatment-resistant depression, and migraine
What makes this unit different from other units on the market?
This is the only nerve stimulator programmed by functional neurologists for the practicing functional neurologist. The unit is designed to be a more portable and versatile neurological simulator.
It has a spectrum of evidence-based settings that are easily chosen by the clinician, without the need to adjust any parameters except intensity. The different treatment settings are varied and robust targeting peripheral neuromodulation of patients with a variety of conditions, all with the same device.
Is this just another TENS device?
This device has TENS capability with low frequency settings specifically to activate central neurological structures. It is not limited to TENS activation, but also incorporates different settings to accomplish a variety of applications.
Will it fix pain like a TENS?
Pain is an experience that originates in the brain. When key brain networks responsible for pain perception and modulation are functioning optimally, pain is naturally reduced. The CereMod™ Alpha is not marketed or intended as a treatment for pain or any other condition. However, improved neural activity and modulation of central structures may result in a change in pain perception. In clinical use, patients may report pain relief, although that effect is a byproduct of improved brain function, not the primary aim of the device.
Why is this so much less expensive than other stim/pain units on the market?
The CereMod™ Alpha was designed to challenge the standard pricing model of medical devices. Many stimulators on the market are marked up significantly—sometimes by 20 to 50 times their production cost—to cover commissions and inflated margins. This device takes a different approach. There are no commission structures, and no unnecessary markups. It was designed to be affordable and accessible, ensuring that healthcare practitioners—not sales teams—benefit most from its use. The device reflects a patient-first and practitioner-first model, where pricing aligns with value, not profit goals.
Are there any accessories?
Accessory development is currently underway. We are working with our partners at Hoolest to create a range of complementary tools to improve the functionality and adaptability of the CereMod™ Alpha. These accessories may include metal probes, TENS pad adapters, belt holsters, and a unique conductive hydrogel that moisturizes the skin and doesn’t require removal. These additions are designed to enhance both the user and patient experience and will be released as they are finalized.
Hoolest® makes similar looking stimulators. How is this different?
Hoolest® stimulators are designed for end consumer use and only vagus nerve stimulation. This is a commercial-grade nerve stimulator designed to stimulate nearly any superficial peripheral nerve. It is stronger, has different parameters, commercial-grade components, and a longer warranty. Aside from the housing and the gel tips, everything else about this device is different.
How can I get trained on using the CereMod™ Alpha?
Training on the CereMod™ Alpha will be provided through the Carrick Institute, which is developing coursework in partnership with experts in electrical engineering, neurophysiology, and functional neurology. This education will help clinicians understand the mechanisms, protocols, and real-world applications of the device. In addition to structured courses, the extensive body of peer-reviewed literature on electrotherapy provides additional guidance for clinical integration.
